Khyargas Nuur

Khyargas Nuur is a saline lake in western Mongolia’s Uvs Province, forming part of the Great Lakes Depression and recognised for its wetlands and steppe-lake ecology.

The lake’s shoreline and marshy areas attract waterbirds and migratory species; the surrounding landscape is a mix of steppe, low hills and semi-desert that offers wide views and limited visitor infrastructure. The area is used for seasonal grazing and small-scale local activities rather than mass tourism.

Khyargas Nuur has long been an integral component of the western Mongolian lake system and its ecology has been shaped by climatic variation and local land use; more recent conservation measures have aimed to protect the lake’s wetlands and bird habitats.

The lake lies in Uvs Province in western Mongolia within the Great Lakes Depression; access is by road from regional towns and the lake sits among semi-arid steppe and low ranges in the western interior of the country.

• Visit in summer (June-September) when access tracks are most likely to be passable and temperatures are mild; winters bring severe cold and difficult travel.

• Go at dawn or sunset for the best light on the lake and to increase chances of seeing shoreline birds and other wildlife that are less active midday.
