Khuvsgul National Park
National Park Vast Mongolian park surrounding freshwater Lake Khuvsgul
Centered on Lake Khuvsgul, this Mongolian national park draws visitors for boat trips, horse and foot treks along pine-fringed shores, encounters with nomadic herders, and winter ice travel on one of the country’s largest freshwater lakes.
Khuvsgul National Park protects the lake and surrounding taiga in northern Mongolia and encompasses the catchment of Lake Khövsgöl, one of the country’s largest and deepest freshwater lakes. The lake holds a very large proportion of Mongolia’s fresh water by volume and is the park’s central natural feature.
The park is prized for long, clear water, forested mountain slopes and a mosaic of alpine and boreal habitats. Popular activities are hiking, horseback trekking along mountain trails, boat trips and, in winter, travel on the frozen lake surface; small reindeer-herding communities live in the northern taiga.
Protection has focused on conserving freshwater, fisheries and taiga ecosystems and on allowing traditional livelihoods of local communities to continue. Visitor facilities are concentrated at lakeside settlements and trailheads.
The park lies in far northern Mongolia close to the Russian border; the settlement of Khatgal is situated at the lake’s southern end and serves as the primary access point for visitors.
- Lake dimensions: The lake is about 136 kilometres long, has a surface area of roughly 2,760 square kilometres and reaches maximum depths of around 260 metres.
- Activities and communities: Home-range activities include summer hiking and horseback trekking and winter travel across the frozen lake, with northern taiga and small reindeer-herding communities nearby.
What to See #
- Lake Khövsgöl: Covers the lake itself, the surrounding taiga and alpine slopes that form a continuous protected area around Mongolia's northern freshwater basin. The lake is the focal point for most park activities.
- Khatgal: A small settlement at the southern tip of the lake serving as the main access and service point for visitors, with boat connections and overland routes into the park.
