Khumbu
Valley High Himalayan Everest region and Sherpa cultural area
Khumbu names the high Himalayan region around Everest: Sherpa villages, Sagarmatha National Park and classic treks to Everest Base Camp. Mountaineering, Himalayan culture, high-altitude lodges and glacier views bring most visitors.
Khumbu is the high-mountain region of northeastern Nepal that includes the southern approaches to Mount Everest and major Sherpa settlements. It is a globally important area for high-altitude trekking and mountaineering and lies largely within Sagarmatha National Park.
The area encompasses glaciers, steep valleys and iconic trekking destinations such as Namche Bazaar and Everest Base Camp, and contains the Khumbu Glacier and the Khumbu Icefall used on Everest’s standard southern climbing route. Routes here are measured in altitude gains and days of trek rather than linear distance.
Sherpa communities settled and developed the valley over centuries; by the 20th century Khumbu became central to Himalayan exploration and later to commercial trekking and climbing. The park was created to protect the region’s natural and cultural values and to manage increasing visitor numbers.
Geographically Khumbu lies in Solukhumbu District in Nepal’s Koshi Province, on the southern slopes of the Himalaya. It is accessed by short mountain flights to Lukla or by longer approaches from lower valleys and is immediately south of the Tibetan border.
- Access and trekking pattern: Trekking routes commonly start with a flight to Lukla and proceed through Sherpa villages, with acclimatisation stops at places such as Namche Bazaar.
- High-altitude environment: Home to the Khumbu Glacier and Khumbu Icefall, the region contains some of the highest permanent human settlements in the world and key mountaineering routes to Mount Everest (8,848.86 m).
What to See #
- Everest Base Camp (South): Everest Base Camp (South) serves as the main trekking objective in the Khumbu region and lies at approximately 5,364 metres above sea level, on routes used by climbers attempting Mount Everest.
- Namche Bazaar: Namche Bazaar is the principal market town and acclimatization stop for trekkers, located at about 3,440 metres and acting as the commercial hub of the Khumbu Sherpa region.
- Sagarmatha National Park and high-mountain zones: Sagarmatha National Park encompasses much of the high Khumbu and includes glaciers, alpine habitats and protected areas centered on Mount Everest and surrounding peaks.
How to Get to Khumbu #
Khumbu (the Everest region) is reached from Kathmandu by air to Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary Airport) - regular mountain flights operate from Kathmandu’s domestic airport - and then on foot. The usual approach is to fly to Lukla and begin the trek from there (several days of trekking to reach places such as Namche Bazaar and Everest Base Camp depending on your itinerary); alternate longer road-and-walk routes exist but the Lukla flight plus trek is the standard access.
Tips for Visiting Khumbu #
- Plan treks in the pre‑monsoon (March-May) or post‑monsoon (September-November) windows for the most reliable weather and best views of Everest and the Khumbu peaks.
- Fly to Lukla as your usual start point but build at least one buffer day into schedules-flights are frequently delayed or canceled for weather and many travellers need a contingency day.
- Factor in proper acclimatization by spacing ascents and including rest days (e.g., at Namche Bazaar); permits are required for the region (Sagarmatha National Park entry and TIMS) so organise permits and a licensed guide or operator before departure.
Best Time to Visit Khumbu #
Aim for the spring (Mar-May) or autumn (Sep-Nov) trekking seasons for the best weather, trail conditions, and mountain views in the Khumbu region.
