Khövsgöl
Lake Large freshwater lake surrounded by taiga and mountains
Khövsgöl’s lake region centers on Lake Khövsgöl, a large freshwater lake rimmed by mountains; visitors come for fishing, hiking, horse trips and summer homestays with northern nomadic communities.
Khövsgöl refers primarily to Lake Khövsgöl in northern Mongolia, a large deep freshwater lake close to the Russian border and the centerpiece of a wider provincial region. The lake is one of Mongolia’s most important freshwater reserves and a major destination for nature-based tourism.
Major highlights include long shoreline treks, boating, trout fishing and horse- or foot-based routes through alpine meadows and old-growth larch forests that fringe the lake. The village of Khatgal at the southern end serves as the usual entry point for boats, supplies and local transport.
The lake basin formed through tectonic and glacial processes and has long been used by local herding communities; modern conservation efforts protect fish stocks, larch forest and water quality while supporting regulated tourism. The lake’s depth and volume make it ecologically important for freshwater biodiversity in Mongolia.
Lake Khövsgöl sits in far northern Mongolia near the Russian border within Khövsgöl Province, surrounded by forested slopes and mountain ridges; the nearest larger provincial town is several hours by road and access is typically via the Khatgal road or seasonal boat services.
- Freshwater reserve: Holds the majority of Mongolia's fresh surface water by volume and is often described as one of the country's largest freshwater lakes.
- Seasonal access: The lake freezes in winter, enabling winter travel and ice-based activities; summer is the main season for trekking, boat travel and horseback routes around the shore.
What to See #
- Lake Khövsgöl: Lake Khövsgöl itself, a deep, clear freshwater lake approximately 2,760 km² in area and with maximum depths over 200 metres, forming the central feature of the region.
- Khatgal: Khatgal village at the lake's southern tip, a principal access point for ferries, boats and overland routes into the lake region and surrounding national park.
How to Get to Khövsgöl #
Khövsgöl (Lake Khövsgöl / Khövsgöl Province) is most easily reached by flying from Ulaanbaatar to Mörön (the provincial capital) and then driving north to the lake area (towns such as Khatgal). Flights between Ulaanbaatar and Mörön operate regularly in the tourism season; alternatively, long overland buses or private vehicles can make the journey from Ulaanbaatar, followed by local road travel to lakeside access points.
Tips for Visiting Khövsgöl #
- For lake access and hiking, visit in summer (mid-June to September) when trails and roads are most reliably passable and guest camps and boat services are operating; winter offers frozen-lake activities but requires specialist guides and gear.
- Allow extra travel time from Mörön or Ulaanbaatar-roads in the region can be rough and distances are long, so plan logistics (fuel, vehicle condition, transfer times) rather than assuming quick drives.
- To avoid the busiest spots on the southern shore, consider staying at a smaller camp on a less-visited bay or visit popular beaches and trails in the early morning; that gives quieter water and wildlife viewing.
Best Time to Visit Khövsgöl #
