Khortytsia
Island Dnieper island preserving Cossack heritage and nature
On the Dnipro River, Khortytsia is Ukraine’s largest river island and the historic site linked to the Zaporizhian Cossacks; visitors use trails and museums to study Cossack history and the island’s steppe ecology.
Khortytsia is the largest island on the Dnieper River, located adjacent to the city of Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine, and is protected as a national reserve for its natural, cultural and archaeological significance. The island is closely associated with the history of the Zaporizhian Cossacks and contains ruins, reconstructions and open-air exhibits.
Visitors follow trails through steppe and wooded areas to visit archaeological sites, reconstructed Cossack fortifications and a museum complex that interprets the island’s role in regional history. The reserve also preserves varied riverine ecosystems and offers viewpoints over the Dnieper.
Historically the island served as a Cossack stronghold (the Zaporizhian Sich) in the early modern period and contains material remains and museum reconstructions documenting that heritage.
Khortytsia lies in the Dnieper River immediately adjacent to Zaporizhzhia and is accessed from the city by road and pedestrian bridges.
- Trails and exhibits: Trails and interpretive exhibits present both natural features and archaeological remains associated with the Zaporizhian Cossacks and earlier settlements.
- Protected reserve: The island is protected as a national cultural and historical reserve, so some areas are conserved for archaeology and ecology rather than intensive tourism.
How to Get to Khortytsia #
Khortytsia Island is part of Zaporizhzhia and is reached from Zaporizhzhia city center. From Zaporizhzhia‑1 railway station or the city centre you can take local buses/marshrutkas or a taxi across the bridges onto the island; the drive is about 5-10 km and takes roughly 10-20 minutes by car. Once on the island, parking areas and visitor entrances to the national reserve are a short walk from the road.
If arriving by car, follow city roads over the bridges linking Zaporizhzhia to Khortytsia; public buses and marshrutkas serve stops near the main museum and park entrances.
Tips for Visiting Khortytsia #
- Start at the Khortytsia Reserve visitor center to pick up maps and orient yourself; using the main reserve entry gives access to the museum complex and marked trails rather than wandering on unmarked paths.
- Visit early in the day on weekdays to enjoy the island's viewpoints and Cossack historic sites with fewer local weekend visitors; the western end of the island is much quieter and worth the walk.
- Allocate time to follow the marked trails to elevated viewpoints overlooking the Dnipro and the hydroelectric works - many visitors stay near the museum area and miss the broader steppe panoramas.
