Khone Phapheng Falls

Khone Phapheng Falls is a broad and powerful complex of rapids and cascades on the Mekong River in southern Laos, within Champasak province and the Si Phan Don area. The falls are noted for the large volume of water moved through multiple channels rather than for a single dramatic vertical drop.

The site offers wide river panoramas, accessible viewpoints on islands such as Don Khon and short walks along riverside paths to watch the turbulent channels. Boat trips and close-up river views are common ways to experience the falls and the surrounding islands.

The falls have long been a natural barrier to river navigation, prompting French-colonial-era works such as a short bypass railway on Don Khon to move goods around the rapids. Local communities historically relied on the river for fishing and transport.
