Khibiny Mountains

The Khibiny Mountains are an isolated massif on Russia’s Kola Peninsula in Murmansk Oblast, noted for their broad plateaus, rounded peaks and mineral-rich geology. The area contains significant deposits of apatite and related minerals and has a history of mining and scientific study.

Outdoor activities include summer hiking on marked routes across tundra and alpine meadows and winter skiing around the towns at the foothills. The range’s northern location also makes it a possible place to see the aurora borealis in winter months.

Modern mining and the development of towns such as Kirovsk in the 20th century established infrastructure and settlement focused on resource extraction and related industries. Scientific studies of the unique geology and mining activity have been important in the 20th and 21st centuries.
