Main image

Khaplu Palace is a historic royal residence in the town of Khaplu in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan. It is a well-preserved example of the region’s traditional palace architecture and has been restored for cultural tourism and public display.

The palace complex contains a sequence of rooms, public halls and courtyards that show local decorative styles and traditional construction techniques. Visitors can tour the restored interiors and some public spaces are interpreted for history and culture; parts of the property are run for visitor accommodation.

The palace was built as the seat of the local rulers of Khaplu and developed over several centuries as the political and cultural centre of the valley. In recent decades it has undergone conservation and restoration to stabilise historic fabric and to provide heritage interpretation.

The palace stands in Khaplu town in Ghanche district of Gilgit-Baltistan, in the northeastern reaches of the Pakistani-administered Karakoram region. It occupies a prominent position within the town and is approached by the local road network from Skardu and other valley settlements.

  • Restoration and access: Restoration work has conserved traditional wood-and-stone architecture and opened parts of the palace for public visits and overnight stays in heritage rooms.
