National Park UNESCO biosphere park encompassing Kangchenjunga, alpine biodiversity
Khangchendzonga National Park in Sikkim protects Mount Kangchenjunga, alpine meadows and sacred glaciers. Trekkers follow high passes, visit remote mountain communities, and encounter Buddhist monasteries and protected Himalayan biodiversity.
Khangchendzonga National Park is a protected area in northern Sikkim, India, that conserves the ecosystems and cultural landscapes around the Kangchenjunga massif. It is notable for including part of the Kangchenjunga massif and its high Himalayan terrain.
The park contains high mountain environments including glaciers, steep valleys and alpine meadows, and provides habitat for high-altitude species and seasonal grazing areas. Trekking routes and remote vistas extend across elevations up to the Kangchenjunga peaks; the massif’s 8,586 m summit is an important landmark in the region.
The site was designated and managed by Indian and Sikkimese authorities to conserve the region’s natural and cultural values and was later inscribed by UNESCO in 2016 as a mixed natural and cultural World Heritage Site. Management has involved protection of both biodiversity and local cultural practices tied to the mountains.
Geographically the park occupies mountainous terrain in northern Sikkim along the India-Nepal/Tibet uplands of the eastern Himalaya. Access is from roadheads in Sikkim and the park lies within the state’s high Himalayan zone, containing remote alpine and glacial landscapes.
- UNESCO status: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016 as a mixed natural and cultural property.
- Peak elevation: Contains part of the Kangchenjunga massif, whose main summit is 8,586 m above sea level.

Fly into Bagdogra Airport (IXB) near Siliguri and drive to Gangtok on NH10 (the Siliguri-Gangtok road) - the road journey from Bagdogra to Gangtok typically takes several hours. From Gangtok you hire shared taxis or private jeeps to the usual trailheads such as Yuksom or Lachen; these road transfers take additional hours and the park is then reached on multi‑day treks, so expect the final approach to involve long walks from the last motorable points.
Tips for Visiting Khangchendzonga National Park #
- Start your visit in the trekking gateway town of Yuksom (the usual base for Goecha La treks) and plan for the pre-monsoon (April-May) or autumn (late September-November) windows when views of Kangchenjunga are clearest and trails are drier.
- Obtain the required permits well in advance - Khangchendzonga is a protected UNESCO site and many trekking routes require forest/permit clearance from Sikkim authorities or a licensed local operator.
- Most visitors focus on the high passes; don't miss the lower-elevation rhododendron and cultural sites near the trailheads (traditional villages and monasteries), and allow extra days for proper altitude acclimatization to avoid having to cut your trek short.
