Khan Tengri is a prominent high peak in the Tien Shan range on the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border renowned for its distinctive pyramid-shaped summit. It reaches an elevation of 7,010 metres and is regarded as one of the more aesthetic high peaks in Central Asia.

Alpinists are drawn by steep snow, ice and mixed routes on the peak, with climbs demanding technical experience and glacier travel. The mountain’s striking form also makes it a landmark visible from many high ridges in the region.

The peak was first visited by early 20th-century explorers and became a target for mountaineers in the Soviet period; it remains a classic high-altitude objective with a history of notable ascents. Modern climbing infrastructure is limited and expeditions are typically self-supported or organised through specialist operators.

Khan Tengri sits on the northern fringe of the central Tian Shan and is approached from valleys leading up from both Kazakh and Kyrgyz sides, with base camps commonly established on glacier forefields.

  • Elevation and character: Rises to 7,010 metres and is known for its sharp, pyramidal appearance and extensive ice and rock routes that require technical mountaineering skills.
  • Climbing access: Approaches typically involve glacier travel and long base-camp logistics; the peak is popular with experienced alpine and high-altitude climbers rather than casual trekkers.
