Khami is an archaeological site of stone-built ruins located near Bulawayo in western Zimbabwe, and it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site preserves terraced stone walls and platforms from a precolonial kingdom.
The remains include extensive dressed stone walls, terraces and platforms that formed part of a planned settlement and elite compounds; the stonework shows decorative patterns and firm construction. The layout and surviving features give insight into social organisation and craft specialization during its occupation.
Khami served as the capital of the Torwa state after the decline of Great Zimbabwe and was occupied from the 15th century into the 17th century. Archaeological investigation and site protection began in the 20th century, leading to UNESCO inscription recognizing its cultural significance.
The site lies to the west of Bulawayo in Bulawayo Province, on a sloping ridge that overlooks surrounding plains and was positioned for strategic and symbolic prominence.
