Khalkhin Gol

Khalkhin Gol is a river and historic battlefield in eastern Mongolia that was the location of major 1939 clashes between Soviet-Mongolian and Japanese-Manchurian forces. The 1939 engagements are often referred to as the Battles of Khalkhin Gol or the Nomonhan Incident.

The site is visited for its historical importance, memorials and the visible terrain of steppe and river channels where mechanised and combined-arms actions took place. Interpretive monuments and local commemorations mark the events and casualties of the campaign.

Military operations in 1939 culminated in large-scale Soviet-led counteroffensives under commanders including Georgy Zhukov, with the fighting influential on subsequent strategic decisions in East Asia before World War II. The battles ended in a ceasefire and subsequent border settlement in 1939.

Khalkhin Gol lies in Dornod Province in far eastern Mongolia near the border region with what was then the Japanese-controlled territory of Manchuria, across a landscape of open steppe and river valleys. The nearest regional towns provide access to the memorial sites and battlefield areas.
