The Kandariya Mahadeva and Lakshmana temples, with their ornate erotic carvings, form the core of a UNESCO-listed group that illustrates Chandela craftsmanship. Each winter the Khajuraho Dance Festival spotlights classical Indian dance against illuminated temple backdrops, giving a rare cultural pairing of architecture and performance. Small museums and local bazaars round out the historic atmosphere.

Best Time to Visit Khajuraho#

Hot Season

March - May

30°C to 45°C (86°F to 113°F)

Blistering, dry heat makes midday temple visits grueling; go early morning, carry water and sun protection, and expect reduced comfort without air-conditioning.

Monsoon

June - September

25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F)

Heavy rains freshen the landscape and cool evenings but can hinder site access and create humid, muddy conditions-expect intermittent showers and fewer tourists.

Cool Season

October - February

10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F)

Dry, pleasant days and cool nights are perfect for exploring the UNESCO temples at leisure; mornings are ideal for photography and long comfortable walks.

How to Get to Khajuraho#

Khajuraho is served by a small regional airport (HJR) with direct flights from major Indian cities; alternatively travellers use nearby railheads or road transfers. Once in the area, taxis and short buses cover the site and nearby towns.

By Air

Khajuraho Airport (HJR): Khajuraho has its own regional airport with scheduled flights to Delhi and Varanasi (flight schedules vary by season). The airport is about 5-10 km from the temple complex - a taxi or auto‑rickshaw takes 15-25 minutes and fares are typically ₹200-600 depending on negotiation and vehicle.

Varanasi (VNS) / Lucknow (LKO): For more international connections consider flying into Varanasi or Lucknow and continuing by road or rail to Khajuraho. Road transfers take several hours (VNS ~4-5 hours) and costs vary by taxi or private car hire.

By Train & Bus

Train: Khajuraho has a small railway station (Khajuraho station) with a handful of passenger services; however many travellers use larger nearby stations such as Mahoba or Satna and then take a taxi. Major trunk lines (e.g., to Jhansi/Satna) connect further afield - check current timetables for direct services.

Bus: State-run and private buses connect Khajuraho to surrounding towns (Jhansi, Chhatarpur, Mahoba). Buses and shared jeeps are inexpensive (from a few tens to a few hundred rupees depending on distance) but can be slow; for convenience many visitors prefer private taxis for door‑to‑door travel.

How to Get Around Khajuraho#

Most visitors arrive via Khajuraho Airport (HJR) or by rail to nearby junctions and then use taxis for flexible local travel. Within the temple area, walking or short cycle/rickshaw trips work best.

  • Khajuraho Airport (taxi/auto) (₹200-600) - Taxis and auto‑rickshaws meet flights and take 15-25 minutes to reach the town and temple complex. Negotiate fares for autos; taxis offer fixed fares and are better for groups or luggage. Drivers often wait for incoming flights.
  • Regional train / rail via Mahoba or Satna (₹50-500 (dependent on route)) - Khajuraho’s own station has limited services; many visitors travel via larger junctions (Mahoba, Satna, or Jhansi) and then take a taxi or bus. Trains are inexpensive but may require a road transfer of 1-3 hours depending on the route.
  • State & private buses (₹30-300) - Regular buses and shared jeeps connect Khajuraho with nearby towns such as Chhatarpur and Jhansi. Buses are very cheap but can be slow and crowded; for comfort and time savings many visitors choose private car transfers instead.
  • Taxi / private car (₹1200-3000/day (approx.)) - Hiring a taxi or private car is the most flexible way to explore Khajuraho and nearby sites (Panna, Orchha). Drivers can be hired for half‑day or full‑day tours and negotiate a fixed rate - useful for reaching more remote temples and sunrise/sunset spots.
  • Cycle / e‑rickshaw around town (₹50-300/day) - Short trips around the village/temple complex are commonly done by bicycle, rented scooter or electric rickshaw. These are inexpensive and handy for last‑mile travel, but avoid cycling in the midday heat.
  • Walking - The Khajuraho temple group is compact and best explored on foot once you arrive at the complex. Paths are well signposted and walking between the main temples takes only minutes.
