Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
Park Cross-border desert park spanning Botswana and South Africa
Straddling South Africa and Botswana, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park covers Kalahari dunes and red-sand semi-desert. Visitors come for self-drive game viewing-lions, cheetahs and raptors-and expansive night skies.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a large transboundary conservation area spanning parts of South Africa and Botswana in the semi-arid Kalahari, established through a bilateral agreement to manage contiguous protected areas cooperatively. The park is characterised by red sand dunes, open grasslands and dry riverbeds and is noted for large predators including the region’s black-maned lions.
Game-viewing focuses on waterholes and dry river courses where wildlife concentrates; the park is best known for wide-open vistas, predator sightings and night-time activity around artificial and natural water points. Visitor infrastructure is concentrated at a few well-equipped rest camps that provide access to internal gravel roads and tracks for self-drive or guided drives.
The transfrontier park was created by merging adjoining protected areas across the Botswana-South Africa border and is managed under a joint framework to facilitate wildlife movement and cross-border tourism. It lies predominantly in South Africa’s Northern Cape and adjoining districts of southern Botswana, within a sparsely populated Kalahari landscape.
- Wildlife viewing tips: Wildlife viewing concentrates around permanent and seasonal waterholes where animals gather; dry season generally offers the most reliable game sightings.
- Transfrontier status: The park is a cross-border reserve spanning parts of South Africa and Botswana, managed cooperatively by both countries.
What to See #
- Twee Rivieren: Twee Rivieren camp on the South African side, serving as a principal visitor reception camp and main entrance with campsites and accommodation.
- Nossob: Nossob camp located in the interior with a permanent waterhole that concentrates wildlife and is a focus for game viewing and night drives.
- Mata-Mata: Mata-Mata on the Botswana side, an entry point from Botswana with direct access to border tracks and viewing of riverine wildlife.
Tips for Visiting Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park #
- Use Twee Rivieren camp as your primary entry/exit point on the South African side-it's the park headquarters and a good base for early-morning drives when predators are most active.
- Book rest-camp accommodation well in advance (especially in winter wildlife season) and plan fuel and supplies at the entry camps-distances between camps are long and services are limited.
- Avoid driving at night: wildlife is active on roads after dark and camp gates/curfews mean night movements are restricted; schedule game drives for early morning and late afternoon to maximize sightings.
