Keuka Lake is one of New York State’s Finger Lakes, notable for its distinctive Y-shaped plan and viticultural shorelines. The lake is about 11 miles (18 kilometers) long and supports a mix of recreation and wine production.
Keuka Lake was formed by glacial action during the last Ice Age and has been farmed and settled since the 18th and 19th centuries; vineyards and wineries were established in the 19th century and remain important to the local economy. Towns at the lake’s ends developed as service centres for agriculture and lake transport.
Located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, Keuka Lake lies between steeper hills and rolling farmland; Penn Yan sits at the north; Hammondsport at the south.

How to Get to Keuka Lake #
Keuka Lake sits in the Finger Lakes region of New York and is most easily reached by car. Major access roads are NY State Route 54 (west side) and NY‑54A (east side); the lake is served by the towns of Penn Yan (north) and Hammondsport (south). From Rochester it’s roughly a 60‑mile drive (about 1-1.5 hours); from Corning it’s a shorter drive of a few dozen miles south. There is very limited public transit directly to the lake, so driving or arranging a taxi from Penn Yan or Bath is the usual approach.
Tips for Visiting Keuka Lake #
- Visit early morning or on weekdays in late spring/early fall when the lake is calm and marinas are quieter - summer weekends are busiest with recreational boat traffic and winery crowds.
- Use public access points at Hammondsport (south end) and the Keuka Lake State Park/Penn Yan area (northwest shore) for easy boat launches, lakeside parking, and direct access to main viewpoints.
- Many visitors focus on the main towns; plan time to drive or cycle the lesser-traveled eastern shoreline and stop at smaller wineries and the Keuka Outlet Trail for quieter bays and unique views of the lake's Y-shape.
