Historical Site Ancient Buddhist stupa complex in Bihar
Kesaria in Bihar hosts one of India’s largest Buddhist stupas; visitors come for the archaeological site, pilgrimage, and views across the surrounding agricultural plain.
Kesaria is an archaeological site in northern Bihar, India, notable for the large ancient Buddhist stupa known locally as the Kesaria Stupa. The mound of the stupa is the principal visible feature on the site.
Visitors encounter the massive stupa mound and surrounding excavation areas where archaeological remains and pottery have been exposed. The site is compact and typically explored on a short visit combined with nearby village roads and fields.
Excavations at Kesaria have revealed layers and finds indicating long-term Buddhist use and construction phases that extend back into antiquity. The stupa complex reflects successive building episodes over many centuries and is a focus for regional archaeological study.
Kesaria sits on the plains of northern Bihar in East Champaran district, close to the village that gives the site its name. The site lies within an agricultural landscape of small roads and settlements.
- Kesaria Stupa: The site centers on a large hemispherical stupa that dominates the local plain and is visible from surrounding farmland.

Tips for Visiting Kesaria #
- Visit early morning or in the cooler months (October-March) to avoid Bihar's midday heat and the worst of seasonal dust; the light is also better for photographing the stupa's brickwork.
- Use the main village approach where the visible steps lead up onto the stupa's terraces - climbing up gives the best sense of the monument's scale and the surrounding plain.
- Check with the local Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) presence or the site caretaker for opening times and any access restrictions; many visitors miss the layered terracing and restored brick details that are easiest to study close-up.
