Kerrera is a small inhabited island in the Firth of Lorn, off the town of Oban on Scotland’s west coast, in Argyll and Bute. It is long and narrow with a mostly rural, coastal landscape of fields, heath and rocky shoreline.
The island features a ruined 16th-century stronghold at the southern tip and a small spread of crofts and cottages; roads on the island are single-track and segments are used by walkers and cyclists. Short passenger boats or private craft connect Kerrera with Oban and other nearby harbours, making day visits common.
Historically the island supported small-scale agriculture and fishing; today it is valued for scenic walking routes, coastal views and the ruined castle.

How to Get to Kerrera #
Kerrera is a small island immediately off Oban in Argyll. Ferries sail from Oban to Kerrera (short passenger crossings of only a few minutes); there is also a small vehicle/landing ferry from Gallanach Road on the mainland side near Oban. From Oban town centre the ferry quays are a short walk or local taxi ride, and once landed on Kerrera most destinations are reached on foot along island tracks.

- Catch the short foot passenger ferry from Oban to Kerrera (services run regularly in summer) and plan your landing to give you a full day ashore-arrivals later in the day reduce time to explore before ferries finish.
- Head south along the island track to Gylen Castle for the best views and sunset light; the castle ruin and coastal walks are much quieter in the late afternoon once day-trippers from Oban have gone.
- Kerrera's roads are single-track and not signed extensively-download offline maps or pick up a local leaflet in Oban, and factor in extra time for walking between sights rather than relying on vehicles.
