Stretching across Sumatra, Kerinci Seblat National Park contains Mount Kerinci, dense rainforest and Sumatran wildlife; visitors come for multi-day treks, volcano climbs, wildlife surveys and hot springs.
Kerinci Seblat National Park is a vast protected area on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, covering roughly 13,800 square kilometres and encompassing a continuous stretch of rainforest and volcanic highlands.
The park contains extensive lowland rainforest, montane forest and peat-swamp areas that support endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger, Sumatran rhinoceros, orangutan and Asian elephant. Mount Kerinci, at 3,805 metres, is the park’s highest peak and a primary destination for trekkers and climbers; the park also contains high-elevation features such as the Gunung Tujuh caldera lake.
The area was set aside as a protected area in the late 20th century to conserve Sumatra’s remaining rainforest and biodiversity, and was later recognised as part of the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra World Heritage listing. Ongoing conservation work focuses on anti-poaching, habitat protection and managing human-wildlife conflicts.
The park stretches along the Bukit Barisan mountain range on central and southern Sumatra and crosses administrative boundaries in several provinces; the nearest regional towns vary by access point, with roads and trails leading into different sectors of the reserve.
- Scale and terrain: The park covers a very large area spanning several provinces and includes both lowland rainforest and high-altitude montane zones, with substantial elevation change around Mount Kerinci.
- Mount Kerinci climb: Mount Kerinci is a major climbing objective at 3,805 metres and requires local guides and preparation for alpine conditions above the forest line.
