Archaeological Site Ancient Athenian cemetery and archaeological site
Near Athens’ Thissio, Kerameikos preserves an ancient cemetery, funerary monuments and a small museum; visitors examine classical grave stelae, city walls and pottery fragments.
Kerameikos is the ancient cemetery quarter and potters’ district of classical Athens, located on the northwest edge of the ancient city. It served as the main burial ground and contained major gateways to ancient Athens.
The visible cemetery with funerary monuments and stelae, the monumental city gate known as the Dipylon, and an on-site archaeological museum displaying finds from excavations. The area provides material evidence for Athenian funerary practices and urban boundaries.
Excavations in Kerameikos began in the 19th century and continued into the 20th century under Greek archaeological services, revealing layers from the Geometric, Archaic, Classical and later periods. Remains include parts of the city wall, roadways and burial installations.
Kerameikos lies within the modern city of Athens, on the northwestern approaches to the Acropolis and near the present-day neighborhood of Gazi. It is a short walk from central Athens transport routes and adjacent archaeological areas.

- Dipylon Gate: The Dipylon Gate and the ancient city wall section where funeral processions exited the city; this is one of the most visible monumental entrances of ancient Athens.
- Kerameikos Archaeological Museum: A small on-site museum that displays funerary reliefs, pottery and other finds recovered from excavations at the cemetery and surrounding excavation trenches.
How to Get to Kerameikos #
Kerameikos is north‑west of the Acropolis, adjacent to the Kerameikos metro station on Athens Metro Line 3 (Blue Line) - from the Kerameikos stop it’s a short 3-5 minute walk to the archaeological site. You can also reach it on foot in about 10-15 minutes from Thissio (Line 1), or by numerous city buses that stop nearby.
Tips for Visiting Kerameikos #
- Use Kerameikos metro station (Line 3) - it drops you almost at the site entrance and saves a long walk from central Athens.
- Visit early in the morning to avoid heat and midday crowds, and be sure to see the small on-site museum, which houses funerary lekythoi and inscriptions that provide much context most passersby miss.
- Take a short walk up to the archaeological site's higher points for a good view over the old city and the modern Thiseio area - the perspective helps connect the ruins to Athens' urban layout.
