Main image

Kerameikos is the ancient cemetery quarter and potters’ district of classical Athens, located on the northwest edge of the ancient city. It served as the main burial ground and contained major gateways to ancient Athens.

The visible cemetery with funerary monuments and stelae, the monumental city gate known as the Dipylon, and an on-site archaeological museum displaying finds from excavations. The area provides material evidence for Athenian funerary practices and urban boundaries.

Excavations in Kerameikos began in the 19th century and continued into the 20th century under Greek archaeological services, revealing layers from the Geometric, Archaic, Classical and later periods. Remains include parts of the city wall, roadways and burial installations.

Kerameikos lies within the modern city of Athens, on the northwestern approaches to the Acropolis and near the present-day neighborhood of Gazi. It is a short walk from central Athens transport routes and adjacent archaeological areas.

  • Dipylon and funerary remains: Contains the Dipylon Gate - a major ancient Athenian city gate - and extensive funerary remains that were in use from the Bronze Age through Roman times.
