The Kepler Track loops through the heart of Fiordland National Park, moving from lowland beech forest and wet valley bottoms up to open subalpine ridges, then down to lakeshore walking beside Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri. The contrast between mossy forest, wind-swept ridge panoramas and tranquil lake edges defines the experience.

Accommodation along the route is a mix of well maintained Department of Conservation huts and designated campsites; huts provide bunks and basic facilities and must be booked during the busier months. Highlights include the ridge section with wide views, forested valleys rich in birdlife and lakeside finishes that feel pleasantly remote.

The nearest town and staging point is Te Anau, reached by road from Queenstown or Invercargill with regular shuttle and bus services. Both Queenstown and Invercargill have domestic airports and onward road connections; hire cars and commercial transfers run to Te Anau.

Most walkers begin at the Kepler control gates near Te Anau and head up to the ridge on day one, tackling the big climb while fresh and then descending into the valley to continue the loop.

In Fiordland National Park the main walking season runs roughly from October to April when huts are staffed and bookings are recommended; the track can be walked outside these months but conditions may be wintry and services limited. Book Department of Conservation huts and campsites well in advance for the December to February window.

Expect very changeable weather at any time - heavy rain, low cloud and strong winds are common. Good waterproofs, warm layers and flexible plans are essential; check local track reports before setting out.
