Kenmore Square

Kenmore Square is a road junction and neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts, at the eastern edge of the Fenway-Kenmore area. It functions as a major urban intersection and transit hub adjacent to Fenway Park, the home of the Boston Red Sox.

The square sits where Commonwealth Avenue, Beacon Street, and Brookline Avenue converge and contains retail, restaurants, and bars that serve local residents, students, and sports crowds. A large illuminated sign visible from the square has become a local visual landmark and a common photo subject for visitors walking Commonwealth Avenue.

The area developed as part of Boston’s expansion with streetcar lines in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The presence of Fenway Park since 1912 and nearby university campuses has strongly influenced commercial and transport patterns in and around the square.

Geographically it lies within the city of Boston, about 1.5 to 2 kilometers west of the central downtown area around Boston Common. The square forms a gateway between the Back Bay/Beacon Hill corridor and the Fenway neighborhood.
