Kenfig Castle
Castle Medieval coastal castle ruins near Kenfig sand dunes
Ruined medieval Kenfig Castle sits amid coastal sand dunes in Wales’ Kenfig National Nature Reserve; visitors combine the castle ruins with dune walks and birdwatching.
Kenfig Castle is a medieval ruin on the coast of South Wales, situated within the Kenfig National Nature Reserve. The site consists of stone remains from a Norman-period fortress set among extensive dunes and coastal grassland.
The castle was built in the medieval era as a defensive stronghold and administrative centre; over time shifting sands contributed to the decline and partial burial of nearby settlement areas. Today the castle stands as a ruined masonry structure visited for both heritage interest and for the surrounding dune landscape.
The site sits near the modern settlements of Pyle and Margam in Bridgend County, on the Glamorgan coast, close to the Bristol Channel shoreline. The dunes and reserve form a coastal buffer and wildlife area around the archaeological remains.
- Buried landscape: The castle dates to the medieval period and the surrounding settlement was largely abandoned and buried by encroaching sand dunes in later centuries.
What to See #
- Castle ruins: The ruined medieval castle shell with surviving curtain walls, a gatehouse and fragmentary masonry that stand within shifting coastal sand dunes.
- Kenfig National Nature Reserve: Kenfig National Nature Reserve surrounding the site, composed of extensive sand dunes that bury and expose archaeological remains seasonally and support specialised coastal flora and fauna.
