Kenchō-ji is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, founded in 1253 and historically ranked first among the city’s major Zen monasteries.
The temple complex includes a prominent two-story gate, a main worship hall, landscaped grounds and several subsidiary temples. Paths from the grounds climb the wooded hillside behind the complex and provide viewpoints over Kamakura and access to smaller shrines.
Established in the mid-13th century during the Kamakura period, the temple was founded to serve as a major Zen training monastery and has retained its role within the Rinzai tradition. Over centuries the precinct has been rebuilt and maintained as a central institution of Zen in the region.
Situated in northern Kamakura near Kita-Kamakura Station, the temple occupies a hillside site within Kanagawa Prefecture roughly a short walk from the city’s center.

Kenchō-ji is a short walk from Kita-Kamakura Station (JR Yokosuka Line), about 5-10 minutes from the station exit. From central Kamakura it is reachable on foot or by local buses; the temple is a standard stop on Kamakura day-trip itineraries from Tokyo.
