Ķemeri National Park
National Park Latvian national park protecting bogs, forests, and coastline
Ķemeri National Park near the Gulf of Riga preserves raised bogs, boardwalk trails and the historical spa town of Ķemeri; people come for birdwatching, peatland walks and mineral-spring history.
Ķemeri National Park is a protected area in western Latvia established to conserve coastal wetlands, raised bogs, forests and lakes. It is one of the country’s principal wetland reserves and includes well-known bog and spa landscapes.
The park’s highlights include extensive peat bogs with boardwalks that let visitors reach open bog surfaces and viewing towers for birdwatching. Wetlands and lakes in the park support migrating and breeding waterbirds, and the nearby spa area contains historic mineral springs and parkland promenades.
Conservation and health-tourism shaped the area over the 19th and 20th centuries, with spa facilities and later formal protection measures implemented to preserve peatland, forest and coastal habitats. The national park designation brought coordinated management for recreation, education and habitat protection.
The park lies near the seaside resort area of Jūrmala and within Tukums Municipality, on Latvia’s western lowlands northwest of Riga. It includes coastal dune systems, lowland forests and inland wetland basins.
- Boardwalk access: Walkways and observation platforms allow close views of the bog without damaging the peatland; some trails are short looped boardwalks under 2 kilometers.
- Mineral springs: Mineral and sulphur springs in the Ķemeri spa area are the historical reason for settlement and health tourism in the zone.
What to See #
- Great Ķemeri Bog: A large raised bog area with wooden boardwalks and viewing platforms that provide access into the peatland and its typical sphagnum and bog vegetation.
- Ķemeri resort: A historic spa and resort district known for sulphur and mineral springs that gave rise to bathing facilities and sanatoria in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
- Lake Kanieris: A shallow coastal lake and reedbed important for waterbirds and part of the park's wetland complex, adjacent to forested areas and dunes.
