Kellett Island
Island Former Hong Kong island, now part of waterfront
Formerly an island in Victoria Harbour near Wan Chai, Kellett Island has been reclaimed and now links to the Causeway Bay waterfront; it’s noted in Hong Kong’s maritime history and nearby promenades.
Kellett Island was originally a small island in Victoria Harbour off Hong Kong Island, in the area of present-day Causeway Bay and Wan Chai. It is best known today as the site occupied by yacht-club facilities and for having been physically connected to the main island by reclamation.
The location now houses marina and waterfront facilities associated with leisure boating and the yacht club rather than remaining a distinct offshore island. The surrounding waters include a typhoon shelter and harbour infrastructure.
The island was named after a British naval officer and later hosted maritime and club facilities as Victoria Harbour and the surrounding shoreline were developed. Land reclamation in the 20th century joined the island to the expanding urban waterfront.
Kellett Island sits off the northern shore of Hong Kong Island in the eastern part of Victoria Harbour, adjacent to the Causeway Bay and Wan Chai districts.
- Current use: The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club's clubhouse occupies the island site and is the most prominent structure visitors will associate with it.
- Land reclamation: The island was connected to Hong Kong Island by land reclamation and is now effectively part of the Causeway Bay/Wan Chai shoreline.
