Kek Lok Si is a large Buddhist temple complex on the Air Itam hillside in Penang, Malaysia, founded in the late 19th century and expanded through the 20th century. It is one of Southeast Asia’s most important Chinese Buddhist temples.
The complex is notable for its multi-tiered terraces, a large pagoda combining East Asian styles and a hilltop pavilion topped by a tall bronze statue of Guanyin that was completed in 2002. Visitors commonly move between lower halls, turtle ponds and the upper terraces for views over George Town and the surrounding island.
Construction began in the late 1800s and the site grew in stages as donations funded new halls, the pagoda and additional shrines; major additions continued into the 20th and early 21st centuries. The Guanyin statue and associated pavilion are among the most recent prominent additions.
Sited on the slopes above Air Itam, the complex sits roughly 6 km southwest of central George Town on Penang Island, reached by road from the city and by local buses that climb the hill.
- Location and scale: Located about 6 km southwest of George Town; combines hillside views with dozens of temples and shrines across several levels.
- Peak visit time: Best visited during Chinese New Year when the complex is decorated with thousands of lanterns and attracts large numbers of worshippers and tourists.
