Waterfall Scenic waterfall in Tochigi Prefecture near Lake Chuzenji.
Kegon Falls drops from Lake Chuzenji near Nikko and offers elevator-access viewing platforms; visitors come for the waterfall, autumn foliage and nearby temples in the national park.
Kegon Falls is a prominent waterfall in Nikko National Park in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, formed where water from Lake Chūzenji drops nearly vertically. The falls have a single main plunge of about 97 metres and are one of the most frequently photographed waterfalls in the region.
The site includes upper and lower observation areas that give different perspectives of the 97 m drop, and the nearby Akechidaira Plateau has a ropeway and viewing terrace that frame the falls with Lake Chūzenji and surrounding forest. Walks and short trails around the lake and valley provide additional viewpoints and access to nearby shrines and nature areas.
The falls are natural and occur where the lake drains through a cliff over the Daiya River system; the lake that feeds the falls occupies a volcanic basin formed by historic activity on Mount Nantai. Facilities for visitors - including built viewing platforms and an elevator to a lower vantage - were added in the 20th century to improve access.
Kegon Falls sits beside Lake Chūzenji in the mountains above the city of Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture, inside Nikko National Park. The site is reached from Nikko town and lies within the park’s highland lake district.
- Best time to visit: Best known for colourful autumn foliage; the contrast of the falls and surrounding beech forest is most dramatic in October and November.
- Viewing options: A paved viewing platform and an elevator give close views of the 97 m plunge, while the Akechidaira ropeway offers a wider panorama of Lake Chūzenji and the valley.
