Kebnekaise

Mountain Sweden's highest peak, glaciated twin summits

In Swedish Lapland, Kebnekaise is the country’s highest peak; mountaineers and hikers tackle glacier routes from Nikkaluokta and cross alpine tundra under long summer daylight.

Main image

Kebnekaise is the highest mountain in Sweden, located in Norrbotten County within the Scandinavian Mountains. The massif has two main summits - a glaciated southern top and a rock-based northern top - and is a focal point for alpine hiking in Swedish Lapland.

Common visitor activities include multi-day trekking, guided summit attempts and staying at the mountain station and surrounding huts that form the standard access network. Routes vary from marked summer trails to glacier travel on the southern summit in colder months.

The range has long been used for reindeer herding by Sámi people and later for mountaineering from the 19th century onwards; contemporary concerns centre on glacial retreat and changes to summit elevations. Services and paths were developed in the 20th century to support tourism and research.

The mountain sits above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden; the nearest typical access point for walkers is the village of Nikkaluokta, with the regional centre of Kiruna further to the north.

  • Elevation variability: Height measurements have changed in recent decades because the southern summit is capped by a glacier that has thinned; check recent surveys if exact elevation matters.
  • Access and conditions: Trailheads and mountain huts near Nikkaluokta provide the most common walking routes; mountain weather can change quickly outside the summer window.

What to See #

  • Southern summit (glaciated): The southern, glaciated summit that historically was Sweden's highest point but has been losing elevation as its ice cap melts in recent decades.
  • Northern summit (rock): The rocky, non-glaciated northern peak that has often been measured as the island's and Sweden's highest exposed rock point when the southern ice cap lowers.
  • Kebnekaise mountain station: A mountain hut and service station used by many walkers as a base for summit attempts and for access to marked trails in the area.

How to Get to Kebnekaise #

Access usually begins in Kiruna by train or air; a road transfer to Nikkaluokta (about 1-1.5 hours from Kiruna) brings hikers to trailheads. From Nikkaluokta a marked trail leads into the Kebnekaise area.

Tips for Visiting Kebnekaise #

  • Because Kebnekaise's southern peak is glacier-covered, hire a certified mountain guide for summit attempts.
  • Access via Nikkaluokta village; reserve mountain huts in advance during high season (e.g., STF Kebnekaise Fjällstation).
  • Monitor conditions: the southern (glaciated) and northern (rock) summits have different risks; recent years show the southern summit shrinking due to melt.
