Kebara Cave is a Middle Paleolithic archaeological site on Mount Carmel in northern Israel that has produced important Neanderthal remains and Mousterian cultural deposits. The site has been a key location for research into Neanderthal anatomy and behaviour.
Excavations uncovered the Kebara 2 skeleton, dated to the Middle Paleolithic period (tens of thousands of years before present), including a preserved hyoid bone that has been cited in discussions about Neanderthal speech capabilities. The stratified deposits at Kebara record repeated human occupation and tool use in the cave.
