Kaveri
Stream Major South Indian river flowing through Tamil Nadu
The Kaveri (Cauvery) river threads through southern India, supporting temple towns, irrigated farmland and seasonal festivals along its banks. Pilgrims and travelers visit riverside temples, boat ghats and birding spots, especially around historic towns in Tamil Nadu.
The Kaveri (Cauvery) is a major river of southern India that rises in the Western Ghats and flows southeast to the Bay of Bengal, with an overall length of about 760 kilometers. It is one of the principal watercourses feeding agriculture and settlements across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Key features along the river include its upland source area in Kodagu, waterfalls on the upper reaches, and a fertile delta region near the coast. The river supports large irrigation schemes and several reservoirs that provide water for farming and hydropower.
Historically the Kaveri has been central to settlement, agriculture, and religious life in the regions it traverses; major engineering works including dams and canals were constructed from the late 19th century into the 20th century to expand irrigation. Its waters have also been the focus of long-standing inter-state agreements and disputes between riparian states.
Geographically the river begins in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, flows through southern Karnataka and across Tamil Nadu, and forms a broad delta before entering the Bay of Bengal on the east coast of India.
- Length: Runs for about 760 kilometers from its source in the Western Ghats to its mouth on the Bay of Bengal, draining a large part of southern India.
- Irrigation importance: Feeds an extensive canal and reservoir network that supports agriculture across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and has been the subject of inter-state water management disputes.
What to See #
- Talakaveri (source): The highland spring area in the Western Ghats where the river rises; regarded as the traditional source and pilgrimage site in Kodagu (Coorg) district.
- Mettur Dam: A large dam and reservoir built across the river that supplies irrigation and hydropower to parts of Tamil Nadu; opened in the early 20th century.
- Hogenakkal and Shivanasamudra falls: A series of waterfalls and rapids on the upper reaches that are noted local attractions and seasonal tourist sites.
Tips for Visiting Kaveri #
- For river visits and sightseeing at waterfalls or ghats, plan mornings-water is calmer, temperatures are lower and ritual activity at major temple ghats is at its peak.
- Avoid the monsoon months (roughly June-September) for boat trips, coracle rides or visiting falls-higher flows make navigation and viewing unsafe and many operators pause services.
- When visiting well-known Kaveri attractions such as Hogenakkal Falls, use the regulated local coracle operators or government boat services and arrive early to beat the crowds at the main viewing spots.
Best Time to Visit Kaveri #
Visit the Kaveri basin in December-February for the most comfortable, drier conditions and easier river-side activities.
