Kaunos
Archaeological Site Ancient Lycian city ruins with rock-cut tombs
Near Dalyan on Turkey’s southwest coast, the ruins of Kaunos include a theatre, rock-cut tombs and a Byzantine harbor; boat trips on the delta, mud baths and the ancient stonework draw archaeological tourists.
Kaunos is an ancient Carian city and archaeological site on the Dalyan channel in Muğla Province, southwestern Turkey, with visible remains from classical antiquity through the Byzantine period.
The site is noted for its cliff-face rock tombs carved into limestone, a hillside theatre, the acropolis and compact urban ruins that sit close to a former sea inlet now turned lagoon. Many visitors view the tombs and waterfront ruins from short boat trips along the Dalyan channel and then walk around the theatre and ruined streets.
Kaunos was occupied from the 1st millennium BCE into the Byzantine era and shows sequential Hellenistic, Roman and later use; its fortunes changed as the harbour silted and the coastline shifted. Archaeological work has recorded defensive walls, public buildings and burial complexes visible today.
The ruins sit adjacent to the modern town of Dalyan in Muğla Province, on the river-lagoon system that links inland waterways to the Mediterranean coast. The site is accessible by short boat rides or local roads from nearby coastal towns.
- Viewing point: Best views of the cliff tombs are from the river channel; many visitor boats run short trips from the nearby town.
- Phased remains: Site combines visible Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine-phase ruins in a compact, walkable area adjacent to modern Dalyan.
What to See #
- Rock-cut tombs: A hillside of carved rock tomb facades cut into a limestone cliff overlooking the delta; the façades are the site's most visible monuments and are reached by a short walk or boat along the Dalyan channel.
- Theatre: A ruined stone theatre set on a slope with surviving seating and stage area, showing Hellenistic and Roman-era re-use.
- Acropolis and urban ruins: The acropolis and surrounding ruined settlement including remains of city walls, a Roman-era agora and bath complexes, located on higher ground above the tombs.
- Harbour and lagoon area: The former harbour area now sits on a silting lagoon separated from the sea by a sandbar; visible remains include quays and scattered masonry near the river channel.

- Combine a Kaunos visit with a river-boat trip on the Dalyan to see the Lycian tomb facades from the water, then walk into the inland ruins to explore the theater and market areas, which receive far fewer visitors.
