Kaunas Fortress
Castle 19th-century fortress complex encircling Kaunas, military heritage
Kaunas Fortress comprises a ring of late 19th-early 20th-century forts around Kaunas; history-minded visitors explore fortifications, military museums and riverside approaches near the city.
Kaunas Fortress is a ring of fortifications built around the city of Kaunas in what is now Lithuania during the period of Russian Imperial rule. Construction and expansion of the fortress system took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to fortify the strategic crossing of the Neman River.
The complex originally comprised multiple forts and supporting works arrayed around Kaunas as part of a defensive ring. One of the most visited components today is the Ninth Fort, which has been converted into a museum and memorial relating to wartime incarceration and mass killings in the 20th century.
Over the 20th century the fortress and its individual forts were repurposed by successive regimes for military, prison and transit uses; parts of the ring fell into disuse while others became sites of wartime atrocity remembrance. Restoration and museum work at selected forts interpret both the military architecture and the human history of the site.
The fortress works are located around Kaunas city in central Lithuania, forming a belt of fortifications that lie outside the urban core but within short driving distance of the city center.

From Kaunas central bus/train station you can reach individual forts by local bus or taxi; driving times vary but many forts are within about 5-15 km of the city centre (roughly a 10-30 minute drive depending on which fort).
If you’re driving, follow main city arteries (e.g. Savanorių prospektas and regional roads) toward the specific fort you plan to visit and use local signage or a map for the final approach.
Tips for Visiting Kaunas Fortress #
- Treat Kaunas Fortress as a network of forts rather than a single site: prioritize the Ninth Fort museum and memorial for the main exhibits and combine it with visits to other individual forts (check which are open) to understand the wider defensive ring.
- Visit the Ninth Fort early in the day to avoid school-group crowds and to have more time in the museum and memorial spaces; check seasonal opening hours in advance (some fort sites close or have limited hours in winter).
- If you want access to lesser-known forts, contact local tourist offices or book a guided tour - several of the outer forts are derelict or only open on request, so a guide is the easiest way to see them safely.
