Kaunas Castle

Kaunas Castle is a brick Gothic fortress located at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers in Kaunas, Lithuania, with origins in the 14th century. The surviving ruins include a reconstructed tower and segments of defensive walls and now accommodate a small museum.

The site presents a compact medieval keep and curtain wall fragments, with interior displays covering the castle’s archaeology and regional history. Visitors can climb the tower to obtain views over the river confluence and Kaunas Old Town.

Constructed during the period of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the castle was involved in medieval military events and later fell into partial ruin before being the focus of conservation and reconstruction in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The castle stands in Kaunas Old Town at the meeting point of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, adjacent to the city’s historic centre.
