Kastelholm Castle

Kastelholm Castle is a medieval stone fortress on the Åland Islands in Finland, with origins in the late 14th century and a surviving keep that dates to that period. The castle later served as an administrative and military center for the Åland region.

The complex includes a central keep and an outer bailey; parts of the site have been restored and house a museum interpreting the castle’s history. Nearby the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum displays traditional farm buildings and cultural material from Åland’s rural past.

Over the centuries the castle changed hands and functions, serving in periods as a regional stronghold, administrative center and prison; it suffered damage in various conflicts and underwent conservation in the 20th century. Today it is presented as a historic site with museum displays and seasonal visitor services.

Kastelholm lies on the eastern side of the Åland main island, near the municipality of Sund, roughly northeast of Mariehamn, the islands’ capital. The castle is accessible by road from nearby settlements and is a common destination on Åland tourist routes.
