Main image

Kastelholm Castle is a medieval stone fortress on the Åland Islands in Finland, with origins in the late 14th century and a surviving keep that dates to that period. The castle later served as an administrative and military center for the Åland region.

The complex includes a central keep and an outer bailey; parts of the site have been restored and house a museum interpreting the castle’s history. Nearby the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum displays traditional farm buildings and cultural material from Åland’s rural past.

Over the centuries the castle changed hands and functions, serving in periods as a regional stronghold, administrative center and prison; it suffered damage in various conflicts and underwent conservation in the 20th century. Today it is presented as a historic site with museum displays and seasonal visitor services.

Kastelholm lies on the eastern side of the Åland main island, near the municipality of Sund, roughly northeast of Mariehamn, the islands’ capital. The castle is accessible by road from nearby settlements and is a common destination on Åland tourist routes.

  • 14th-century origins: First documented references to the castle date to the late 14th century, and the stone keep is one of the oldest surviving parts.
  • Combined castle and open-air museum: The site combines a restored castle complex with an adjacent open-air museum that together explain Åland's medieval and rural history.

  • Keep: The medieval stone keep dates to the 14th century and forms the central defensive tower of the castle complex.
  • Outer bailey and museum: The outer bailey and surrounding defensive walls contain later additions and house a small on-site museum that interprets the site's history.
  • Jan Karlsgården open-air museum: Jan Karlsgården open-air museum lies adjacent to the castle and presents traditional Åland farm buildings and rural life reconstructions from the 18th and 19th centuries.
