How to Get to Karyes, Mount Athos

Karyes (Mount Athos) is reached overland to the Ouranoupoli/Dafni gateway and then by the official boat to Dafni; there are no regular public flights or rail services directly to the monastic state. Visiting Karyes requires prior permission (Diamonitirion) and is restricted to men only under Greek law.

By Air

Thessaloniki Airport (SKG): The main international gateway for access to Mount Athos. From SKG you can reach Ouranoupoli by KTEL bus or rental car - bus journey is around 3.5-4 hours and fares typically €15-€25; a taxi or private transfer is faster but much more expensive.

Kavala / Alexandroupoli (KVA / AXD): These airports are less direct but sometimes used by travellers heading to Halkidiki/Ouranoupoli; surface travel from either airport to Ouranoupoli is 3-5 hours by bus/car and costs vary by operator and season.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no direct rail service to Mount Athos; the nearest major rail hub is Thessaloniki. From Thessaloniki take a KTEL long‑distance bus towards Ouranoupoli.

Bus / ferry: Ouranoupoli (the usual gateway village) is served by KTEL buses from Thessaloniki (3.5-4 h, ~€15-€25). From Ouranoupoli catch the official ferry or small boat to Dafni port on Mount Athos (ferry ~30-60 min, fares around €6-€12 depending on vessel). From Dafni the route to Karyes is by monastery vehicle or on foot (several kilometres) - note special access rules and permit requirements (see description).

Karyes is the administrative centre of Mount Athos and is entirely pedestrian; there are no public motor vehicles for visitors. Access to the peninsula is tightly regulated: only male visitors with a Diamonitirion (permit) may visit, and ferries run from Ouranoupolis or Ierissos. Once ashore you walk between monasteries and sketes. Bring sensible footwear for uneven paths and be prepared for limited services - most movement is on foot or by monastery-arranged mule/boat where permitted.
