Karwendel
Mountains Alpine mountain range popular for hiking and wildlife
The Karwendel range in Tyrol offers limestone peaks, alpine trails and hut‑to‑hut routes popular with hikers, climbers and backcountry skiers exploring the Northern Alps.
Karwendel is a mountain range in the Northern Limestone Alps located primarily in Tyrol, Austria, with portions extending into Bavaria, Germany. Its highest summit is Birkkarspitze at 2,749 metres and it is the largest range within the Northern Limestone Alps.
The range is known for long limestone ridges, steep north faces and high alpine valleys that attract hikers, climbers and ski tourers. Popular activities include multi-day ridge traverses and day hikes into deep valleys; many routes lead to exposed cols and steep arêtes. Mountain huts and marked trails provide access across the range, though some routes require alpine experience and route-finding.
The Karwendel was formed by the Alpine orogeny and is typical of limestone alpine geology with cirques and karst features. Human use has centered on pastoralism and mountain tourism; alpine mountaineering and organised hiking became established from the 19th century onward.
The Karwendel massif sits immediately northeast of Innsbruck in Tyrol. The range runs along the Austria-Germany border and dominates the landscape north of the Inn Valley, with road and trailheads concentrated on the Tyrolean side.
- Highest peak: The highest summit is Birkkarspitze at 2,749 metres, a common objective for experienced mountaineers.
- Best time to visit: Best hiking access is from the valleys on the southern (Tyrolean) side in summer; many trails become technical or snowbound outside June to September.
