Alpenzoo Innsbruck Museum

Alpenzoo Innsbruck is a specialist zoo in Innsbruck, Austria, positioned on the lower slopes of the Nordkette and dedicated primarily to species native to the Alpine region.

The collection concentrates on mammals, birds and reptiles adapted to mountain environments and presents them in terraced outdoor enclosures and themed exhibits; the facility also runs conservation and educational programmes.

The zoo was established in the 20th century and remains one of Innsbruck’s visitor attractions because of its focus on Alpine biodiversity and its convenient proximity to the city centre.

• Predator enclosures: Carnivore enclosures housing species such as wolves and lynx, designed to show natural behaviours and habitat adaptations.

From Innsbruck city center, take the Nordkettenbahnen/Hungerburg funicular from Congress or the Hauptbahnhof area to the Alpenzoo stop (about 10-15 minutes). The zoo entrance is a short walk from the Hungerburg station. Driving is possible via Hungerburgstraße with limited parking; walking uphill from the city takes roughly 30-45 minutes depending on pace.

• Take the Hungerburg funicular from Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof and get off at the Alpenzoo stop-arrive early to see animals before the afternoon heat.
• Bring binoculars: several enclosures are designed into the slope and distant animals are best seen from the upper paths.
• Use the terrace café to watch the city and Nordkette ridgeline-the view is as much a draw as the animals.
