How to Get to Karuizawa#

Karuizawa is easiest to reach by shinkansen: the Hokuriku Shinkansen stops at Karuizawa Station and gives a fast connection from Tokyo. For budget travelers, highway buses from Tokyo and surrounding hubs are a reliable, cheaper option.

By Air

Narita International Airport (NRT): From Narita take the Narita Express (N’EX) or Keisei Skyliner to Tokyo stations (approx 55-90 minutes, N’EX around ¥3,000-3,200 to Tokyo). From Tokyo Station catch the Hokuriku Shinkansen (Asama) direct to Karuizawa (about 1 hour 10 minutes, see shinkansen fares below).

Haneda Airport (HND): Haneda is closer to central Tokyo. From Haneda take the Keikyu Line or an airport limousine bus to Tokyo Station or Shinjuku (30-60 minutes, fares roughly ¥300-1,200), then transfer to the Hokuriku Shinkansen bound for Karuizawa.

By Train & Bus

Train: Karuizawa Station is on the Hokuriku Shinkansen (Asama services) between Tokyo and Nagano. Travel time from Tokyo Station is about 1 h 10-15 min; one-way fares are typically in the ¥5,000-¥6,500 range depending on seat/reservation. Local JR lines and buses serve nearby resorts and the station.

Bus: Highway (express) buses run from Shinjuku and other Tokyo terminals to Karuizawa. Journey time is around 2.5-4 hours depending on traffic and the route; fares commonly range from about ¥2,500-¥4,000 one-way. Buses are a good lower-cost alternative and can be direct from major Tokyo terminals.

How to Get Around Karuizawa#

Shinkansen is the fastest and most convenient option from Tokyo and other major cities; book reserved seats in peak seasons. Buses and local shuttles cover lower-cost and last-mile travel, while bikes make short sightseeing easy.

  • Hokuriku Shinkansen (Asama) (¥5,000-¥6,500) - The Asama shinkansen services connect Tokyo and Karuizawa in about 70-75 minutes. Reserved-seat fares are common and can vary by season-book early in holiday periods. The station is central to the town, with taxis, rental bikes and local buses waiting outside.
  • Local JR / shuttle buses - Local JR lines and community shuttle buses link Karuizawa Station with hotels, the Kyu-Karuizawa area and nearby attractions. Timetables can be seasonal, so check local websites for winter/summer service changes. Useful for last-mile travel when staying outside immediate town centre.
  • Highway / express bus (¥2,500-¥4,000) - Highway buses from Shinjuku and other Tokyo terminals are cheaper than the shinkansen and run overnight or daytime services. Travel time is longer (2.5-4 hours) but direct buses avoid transfers and can be comfortable with reserved seating options.
  • Car rental (¥6,000-¥12,000/day) - Renting a car gives flexibility for exploring the wider Nagano area, mountain roads and small villages around Karuizawa. Parking is widely available but can be busy during peak seasons; winter conditions require appropriate tires.
  • Bicycle / local taxi (Bicycle ¥1,000-¥3,000/day; Taxi ¥700-¥2,500) - Karuizawa is compact and very bike-friendly; many hotels offer bike rentals to explore the promenade and nearby sights. Taxis are available for shorter hops or late arrivals but are more expensive than buses.
  • Walking - The town center and Kyu-Karuizawa area are pleasant to explore on foot with shops, cafes and parks close together. Walking is one of the best ways to enjoy the local atmosphere.
