Karpathos
Island Greek island with rugged landscape and beaches
Karpathos, a Dodecanese island, combines steep interior villages like Olympos with sheltered beaches such as Apella. Visitors come for traditional island life, windsurfing on exposed bays, local cuisine and ferry connections to other Aegean islands.
Karpathos is an island in the southern Aegean Sea that is part of Greece’s Dodecanese island group, located between Crete and Rhodes. The island is characterized by a rugged interior, coastal beaches and a network of traditional villages.
Beaches such as Apella and Kyra Panagia attract swimmers and sunbathers, while windy bays support windsurfing and kitesurfing in season. Interior mountain villages retain distinctive local architecture and customs, and hiking routes connect coastal and inland areas.
Historically the island’s communities have maintained distinctive dialects and traditions owing to their relative isolation, and local cuisine and festivals form part of the visitor experience. Transport to the island is by ferry or by flight to the island’s airport.
Karpathos lies in the South Aegean region of Greece, positioned between the larger islands of Rhodes to the east and Crete to the south-west; the island has a mix of rocky mountains and sheltered bays along its coastline.
- Wind conditions: Karpathos is known for strong Meltemi winds in summer that make some beaches popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers.
- Cultural highlights: Traditional villages in the interior preserve local cultural customs and dress, and many visitors combine beach time with inland village visits for cultural experiences.
How to Get to Karpathos #
Karpathos is reached by air or sea. There are scheduled flights (seasonal) from Athens and other Greek airports into Karpathos Airport (near Pigadia), and regular ferry services connect Pigadia with Piraeus and nearby Dodecanese islands (for example Rhodes) during the tourist season. From Pigadia harbour or the airport the main town, beaches and villages are a short taxi or local-bus ride or within easy walking distance in many cases.
Tips for Visiting Karpathos #
- Travel in shoulder seasons (late spring or early September) to avoid the height of summer crowds and still enjoy warm sea conditions - many accommodation and ferry services are easier to book then.
- Base yourself in Pigadia (Karpathos Town) if you need frequent ferry or bus connections; from there you can reach excursions, the airport and inter-island ferries more easily than from smaller harbors.
- If you want calmer sea conditions for swimming rather than windsurfing, visit south-coast windsurfing spots (like Afiartis) early in the morning when the meltemi wind is usually lighter.
- Allow extra time to reach mountain villages such as Olympos; they're accessed by narrow, winding roads and public buses run infrequently, so check schedules or pre-book a transfer for reliable timing.
Best Time to Visit Karpathos #
Visit Karpathos in late spring or early autumn for pleasant weather and fewer crowds; peak summer is best for beach and windsurfing.
