Karlstor is a medieval city gate in central Munich, Bavaria, located at the western end of Neuhauser Straße at the edge of Karlsplatz (commonly called Stachus). It is one of the surviving gates from Munich’s medieval fortifications.
The gate forms the pedestrian gateway into Munich’s historic shopping street and is a frequent meeting point and photographic subject. The immediate area includes tram and S-Bahn connections and large public squares.
Karlstor originated as part of the city’s medieval defensive ring and has been altered and restored over the centuries while retaining its role as a prominent urban landmark. Today it is primarily a historic monument and an entry point to the city centre.
The gate stands at Karlsplatz in central Munich and is directly connected to the city’s public transport hub.
