Karlštejn
Castle Gothic castle founded by Charles IV, near Prague
Karlštejn is a 14th-century Gothic castle founded by Charles IV; visitors hike surrounding woods, tour medieval chapels and photograph the fortified silhouette above the Berounka valley.
Karlštejn is a Gothic castle located in the Central Bohemian Region, southwest of Prague, founded in the mid-14th century. It is one of the Czech Republic’s best-known medieval fortresses.
The site presents a compact, uphill castle complex with narrow courtyards, defensive towers and stone battlements offering views over forested valleys. Most visitors follow a guided route through the core chambers and chapels and pause at lookout points on the ramparts.
Established by Emperor Charles IV in 1348, the castle was originally intended to serve as a secure depository for royal regalia and relics. It underwent repairs and stylistic changes over the centuries and experienced significant restorative work in the 19th century to preserve its Gothic appearance.
Sitting on a wooded hill above the Berounka River valley, Karlštejn is about 30 km southwest of central Prague and is accessible by regional train or road from Prague and nearby towns.
- Interior access: Guided tours are the usual way to see the main interiors, and spaces are often visited on timed circuits during high season.
- Access note: The village below the castle offers parking and train access; expect a steep walk of 15-30 minutes up to the fortress from the village level.
What to See #
- Great Tower and Imperial Palace: The castle's central complex includes the Great Tower and Imperial Palace, which house the historic chapel and ceremonial rooms dating from the 14th century.
- Outer bailey and residential wings: A small, fortified outer bailey and residential wings that were added and remodeled over later centuries and are included on the standard visitor circuit.
How to Get to Karlštejn #

Tips for Visiting Karlštejn #
- Arrive early (right at opening) to beat the day-trip coach crowds that build through late morning; parking in the village fills quickly in summer.
- Park in Karlštejn village and walk the wooded path up to the castle rather than using any local shuttles-this scenic route is quieter and reveals viewpoints and small chapels that many visitors overlook.
- Book interior guided-tour tickets in advance during high season if you plan to see the Great Tower or specific state rooms; those tours have limited capacity and sell out.
Best Time to Visit Karlštejn #
Best visited late spring through early autumn when the castle and surrounding trails are most pleasant and fully accessible.
