Karla Caves

The Karla Caves are a complex of ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves near Lonavala in Maharashtra, comprising a large chaitya (prayer hall) and multiple monastic cells. The main chaitya is one of the largest and best-preserved rock-cut assembly halls in western India and retains traces of original wooden detailing.

The complex developed over several centuries, with the principal chaitya and surrounding viharas carved and decorated during the early historic period by Buddhist communities and patrons active on regional trade routes. The site includes carved reliefs, inscriptions and architectural detailing that document religious and patronage practices of the period.

Karla lies in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra and is accessible from nearby towns and road links; the caves are a major example of Indian rock-cut religious architecture and are often visited as part of regional cultural tourism.

• Inscription evidence: The principal chaitya contains an inscription mentioning contemporary donors and rulers of the period, linking the site to early historic trade routes and patronage.
