Main image

Karl-Alexander Island is an uninhabited island in the Franz Josef Land archipelago, administratively part of Arkhangelskaya oblast in the Russian Arctic. It lies well above the Arctic Circle and is within the high-latitude polar environment of the Arctic Ocean.

The island is glaciated and dominated by polar tundra and sea-ice conditions for most of the year. There are no permanent settlements and human activity is limited to occasional scientific or expedition visits and seasonal ship-based tourism that operates in the wider Franz Josef Land area.

The island was charted as part of the exploration and mapping of Franz Josef Land during Arctic exploration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over time the archipelago has been used intermittently for scientific stations and as a waypoint in polar research and navigation.

Karl-Alexander Island sits in the northeastern Barents/Arctic sea region of Franz Josef Land, far north of mainland Russia. The nearest large administrative center on the Russian mainland is Arkhangelsk, several hundred to about a thousand kilometres to the south, across the waters of the Barents and Kara seas.
