The Karakuş Tumulus is a Hellenistic-Roman period funerary monument in southeastern Turkey associated with the ancient Kingdom of Commagene. The site is notable for a columned memorial terrace decorated with sculpted birds and reliefs.
Visitors encounter a raised earthen tumulus backed by a line of monumental stone columns and sculpted capitals, several of which are topped by carved eagles and other animal forms. The visible masonry and sculptural fragments are typical of Commagene royal funerary architecture and stand in an open rural setting.
The monument was erected by the Commagene kingdom in the Hellenistic-Roman era as a funerary and commemorative complex for royal women of the dynasty. Its standing columns and sculptural elements survive as the primary archaeological remains.
The tumulus sits near the modern Kahta district in Adıyaman Province in southeastern Turkey, on the lower slopes above the Euphrates valley.

How to Get to Karakuş Tumulus #
Karakuş sits near the town of Kahta, about 25-30 km east of Adıyaman city. From Adıyaman, take the D-975 east toward Kahta; local minibuses (dolmuş) serve Kahta from the city center. From Kahta the tumulus is a short drive (10-15 minutes) to the site parking and a steep 10-20 minute walk up the marked path to the mound.
Tips for Visiting Karakuş Tumulus #
- Visit early morning to catch sunlight skimming the columns-late afternoon flattens the reliefs and heats the hilltop.
- Combine with a visit to Nemrut Dağı (about 50 km east) to see the broader Commagene landscape in one day.
- Wear good walking shoes; the path up to the tumulus is steep and the stone steps are weathered and uneven.
