Karakorum (Kharkhorin) is the site of the medieval Mongol Empire’s capital established in the early 13th century and is located in central Mongolia’s Övörkhangai Province. The settlement area contains visible archaeological traces of city planning and imperial use alongside later religious structures.

Visitors commonly see the excavated layout and foundations of the ancient capital and the nearby Erdene Zuu Monastery, founded in 1586 and built from stones taken at the old city. The monastery contains several temples, stupas and museum displays that document monastic life and the reuse of imperial materials.

Karakorum was founded as a political and administrative center during the early Mongol Empire and later declined as political power moved; the monastery complex reflects the site’s continued religious importance from the 16th century onward. Archaeological excavation and conservation have been ongoing since the 20th century to document the city’s layout and material culture.

The site lies in central Mongolia in a broad valley, accessible by road from provincial towns and commonly included on overland circuits connecting the Orkhon Valley and surrounding historic landscapes.

  • Dual heritage: The site combines ruins of the 13th-century imperial capital with a later 16th-century monastery, so visits typically include both archaeological remains and monastic buildings.

Tips for Visiting Karakorum #

  • Go early in the day (or late afternoon) to enjoy Erdene Zuu and the surrounding ruins with fewer coach groups and better light for photography.
  • Combine the monastery complex with the nearby Kharkhorin Museum and the low stone walls around Erdene Zuu - visitors who only walk the main courtyard often miss artifacts and old stelae in the museum.
  • If you're travelling from Ulaanbaatar, consider spending the night in Kharkhorin/Kharkhorum rather than making a long day trip so you can catch sunrise/sunset over the valley and avoid peak tour-bus hours.
