Karakelang, the main island of the Sitaro archipelago in North Sulawesi, attracts visitors for coastal villages, access to local fisheries and nearby coral reefs for snorkeling and diving.
Karakelang is the largest island in the Talaud Islands group, administratively part of North Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is the principal inhabited island in the cluster and contains the main port and settlement for the regency.
The island’s main settlement and administrative center is Melonguane, which hosts government offices, marketplaces and the island’s primary transport links. Local economies are based on fishing, small-scale agriculture and inter-island trade.
The Talaud Islands, including Karakelang, have long-standing local communities with maritime traditions and regular inter-island connections. Modern infrastructure is concentrated around the main town and port.
Karakelang lies in the far north of the Indonesian archipelago, north of mainland Sulawesi and relatively close to the maritime boundary with the southern Philippines. The island is reached by scheduled and charter marine services and by limited regional air services to the main town.
