Kara Dag Mountain (Karadag) is a volcanic massif and headland on the southeastern coast of Crimea, forming a prominent coastal promontory on the Black Sea near the town of Koktebel.
The landscape is characterized by folded lava domes, steep cliffs, sea caves and rocky shoreline that support diverse plant communities and seabird colonies; the area is a focus for geological study and natural-history visits. Access is mainly by road to nearby towns and by boat along the coastline for coastal views.
The massif formed from volcanic activity in the region’s geologic past; in the 20th century parts of the area were designated for protection to conserve its unique geology and biodiversity. The headland’s dramatic geology and marine environment have long attracted scientific interest and nature-based tourism.
Kara Dag projects into the Black Sea on Crimea’s southeastern coast, immediately east of the town of Koktebel; the headland and adjacent marine zone sit within the coastal landscape of the Kerch and Feodosiya region.
- Nature reserve status: The area is protected as the Karadag Nature Reserve, noted for coastal cliffs, sea caves and a high level of endemic flora and fauna on the volcanic massif.
