Kapuvár City
City in Győr-Moson-Sopron, known for history
Near the Austrian border, Kapuvár links to the Fertő‑Hanság wetlands and cycling paths around Lake Neusiedl. Spa visitors and birdwatchers pass through for thermal pools and cross-border market trips.
Why Visit Kapuvár?#
Set close to the Austrian border, this small Hungarian town attracts those who want quiet regional charm and access to nature reserves such as the nearby Hanság wetlands. Historic churches and a compact main street give a glimpse of traditional life, while hearty goulash, lángos and local pastries appear on menus at family-run inns. Travelers also use it as a jumping-off point for cycling and birdwatching in the surrounding plains.

How to Get to Kapuvár#
Kapuvár is a small town in north‑western Hungary with good regional rail links to Győr and onward connections to Vienna or Budapest. Trains are usually the simplest way to get there from major airports.
Vienna International (VIE): Vienna is the closest major international airport for Kapuvár. From Vienna Hauptbahnhof take ÖBB regional or Railjet services toward Győr and then a regional connection to Kapuvár; total travel time is about 1.5-2.5 hours. Fares vary widely by train type and booking-regional legs are typically inexpensive (~a few euros to tens of euros).
Budapest Ferenc Liszt (BUD): Budapest is also an option; from BUD use the airport bus or taxi to a city rail station (Nyugati/M3 or Keleti) then trains toward Győr and Kapuvár. Expect total journey times of ~2.5-3.5 hours by public transport.
Train: Kapuvár has a railway station (Kapuvár vasútállomás) on regional lines connecting to Győr and Szombathely; trains from Győr take ~20-40 minutes, and from Budapest ~2-2.5 hours. MÁV operates these routes and timetables are available online.
Bus: Regional buses connect Kapuvár with surrounding villages and with Győr. Buses are useful for stops not on the rail line and for evening services; fares are modest and schedules published by local Volán operators.
How to Get Around Kapuvár#
Regional rail is the most efficient way to reach Kapuvár - quick connections from Győr and onward links to Vienna/Budapest. Use buses or taxis for rural last‑mile travel; the town itself is very walkable.
- Regional train (MÁV) (2 000-4 000 HUF) - Trains from Győr to Kapuvár are frequent and quick (under an hour); from Budapest expect around 2-2.5 hours with a change in Győr depending on service. Trains are comfortable and reliable for intercity travel in this region.
- Regional bus (Volán) (Low) - Local Volán buses cover Kapuvár’s rural hinterland and provide alternative connections to towns not directly served by rail. Buses are practical for short hops and evening travel when trains are less frequent.
- Taxi / private transfer (Moderate-High) - Taxis from the station or private transfers are handy for early/late connections or if you have bulky luggage. Agree on a fare or use the meter; longer trips from airports are significantly more expensive than public transport.
- Bicycle (Low-moderate) - The surrounding countryside is flat and suited to cycling; some guesthouses may offer bike rentals and local roads are pleasant for short tours. Good option in fair weather for exploring local villages.
- Walking - Kapuvár’s centre is compact and easily explored on foot. Walking is the best way to reach local shops, cafés and historic points from the station.
