Kapova Cave (also known as Shulgan-Tash) is a limestone karst cave in Burzyansky District, Bashkortostan, Russia, notable for its Paleolithic cave paintings. The site is one of the few locations with prehistoric parietal art in the Ural region.
The interior houses parietal paintings that depict large Ice Age animals including mammoths, horses and rhinoceroses, as well as abstract signs. The painted panels are concentrated in chambers set back from the cave entrance and are sensitive to changes in humidity and visitor traffic.
The cave paintings are attributed to the Upper Paleolithic and have been studied by Russian archaeologists and speleologists in the 20th century. Over time the site has been subject to conservation measures to limit damage from visitors and environmental change.
Kapova Cave lies on the southern slope of the Ural Mountains in Burzyansky District, on the right bank of the Belaya River near the village of Shulgan-Tash. The surrounding landscape is forested hills of the southern Urals.
- Visiting rules: Access is regulated and usually limited to guided visits to protect the cave art and microclimate.
- Cave art: Contains Paleolithic parietal art featuring mammoths, horses and rhinoceroses, among the few such sites in the Ural region.
