Kao is a volcanic island in the Ha’apai island group of Tonga and is a steep, largely uninhabited volcanic cone. Its summit is the highest point in Tonga at about 1,030 metres above sea level.
The island presents a prominent conical profile rising directly from the surrounding sea and is not continuously settled; visits require boat access from other Ha’apai islands. Because of its steep slopes and remote location it is visited only occasionally by climbers and local boat operators.
Kao sits within the central Ha’apai island chain in Tonga and forms part of the island group’s volcanic landscape, north of the main island of Tongatapu and accessible from local Ha’apai ports.

How to Get to Kao (island) #
Kao is in the Haʻapai island group and has no regular public transport. The usual route is to fly from Nukuʻalofa (Fuaʻamotu Airport) to Lifuka (Haʻapai) on domestic services (Real Tonga) and then arrange a private boat or charter from Lifuka/Pangai to Kao - there are no scheduled ferries. Landing requires local coordination with boat operators from Lifuka; expect a multi-hour sea crossing depending on vessel.
